A focus on wellbeing must be part of a key council policy committee, Fine Gael councillor for Galway City West has urged.Cllr. Clodagh Higgins has called on Galway City Council to change the title of the ‘Economic, Cultural and Community Development Strategic Policy’ Committee to the ‘Economic, Cultural, Community Development and Wellbeing’ Committee to reflect the growing emphasis on good mental health.

Cllr. Higgins stated: “As a result of the pandemic there has been an increase in mental health challenges across every age group and it is imperative at every level there is assistance given”. “By simply including the word ‘wellbeing’ to the title of the Strategic Policy Committee (SPC), it will allow us to feed wellbeing initiatives through that committee,” explained Cllr. Higgins who is a Psychologist by profession.

Cllr. Higgins added:  “Galway City Council needs to be commended on the wellbeing initiatives that they have currently put in place but we need to extend this and offer variety and I believe the best way to achieve this is to have meaningful engagement and debate on this via the SPC.”

Cllr. Higgins added. “We need to lead the way as a local authority and that is why I have contacted the Chief Executive and the Director of Services and made this very important request” Cllr. Higgins concluded “this small change would pay dividends when it comes to wellbeing and indeed lifting the stigma of mental health.”
