New scheme to increase outdoor dining capacity an important lifeline for the hospitality industry – Cllr. Higgins

Fine Gael Councillor Clodagh Higgins has today welcomed news of a new scheme which will be delivered in partnership between Fáilte Ireland and Galway City Council which will help tourism and hospitality businesses in Galway to develop and increase their outdoor seating capacity.

Councillor Higgins said “funding allocated under the scheme will also enable Local Authorities to develop permanent outdoor public dining spaces in towns and urban centres across the country which will benefit the hospitality industry which is struggling hugely at present”.

Councillor Higgins stated “in May 2020 I set down a motion requesting Galway City Council to designate public areas specifically for the use of the hospitality industry while adhering to social distancing guidelines and best practices as I believed it was imperative in order for businesses to survive what has been a very challenging time”. Councillor Higgins said “it is important to recognise that some businesses do not have the capacity for outdoor dining so creating areas designated for the hospitality industry will be crucial for everyone to benefit equally”.

Councillor Higgins continued “Developing outdoor dining and socialising spaces will help to improve the vibrancy of our City. Today’s announcement regarding the new Outdoor Dining Scheme has two aims. It will enable individual tourism and hospitality businesses to increase their dining and seating capacity in the short-term and will also create a long-term strategy for our local authority to develop appropriate, permanent, weatherproofed outdoor dining infrastructure in Galway.

“This will support jobs and businesses and transform appropriate outdoor spaces across Galway as welcoming, vibrant places that will help support economic recovery.”
