Councillor Clodagh Higgins has today called on Galway City Council to act now in relation to loss of life on the River Corrib.

Councillor Higgins has set down a motion calling on Galway City Council to implement a plan with relevant stakeholders in order to combat the loss of life on the River Corrib. Such meetings would explore effective actions that could be taken to improve safety concerns on the River Corrib.

Councillor Higgins said “As a practicing Psychologist mental health and suicide prevention are two of my core priorities. It’s very important for public representatives to take the lead and introduce initiatives that will make a change. In Galway many suicides and accidental deaths have occurred on the River Corrib and nothing meaningful has been done to curtail the regrettable statistics and prevent the sad statistics from growing”. Councillor Higgins added “ Galway City Council is best placed to organise these meetings which will ensure everyone will collaborate to deliver effective outcomes and prevent such tragedies”.

Councillor Higgins concluded “Galway City Council needs to lead the charge and take ownership of this issue because it isn’t going away. Real leadership is needed now in order to deal with this loss and hurt that is being caused to families the length and breath of the county and as a councillor I want to play my part”.
